Recovery Derm Shield vs Saniderm

Recovery Derm Shield and Saniderm are both popular tattoo aftercare products that utilize a transparent film to protect fresh tattoos. Choosing between the two usually comes down to the preference of the artist, but there are a couple of key distinctions. First, Recovery Derm has a more matte finish than Saniderm, making it less shiny and noticeable. Many artists report that Derm Shield feels more flexible and “natural” than similar products like Saniderm. Finally, Recovery Derm offers a black bandage, making it ideal for clients who need to protect their new tattoo from prolonged sun exposure.

Ultimately, both are great products used by artists worldwide. We recommend trying both to see where your preferences lie.

How to Use Recovery Derm Shield Tattoo Aftercare Bandages

First, gently clean and dry the tattoo and surrounding area as you normally would. Make sure no soap residue remains on the skin as it could interfere with adhesion. With clean gloves, remove Derm Shield from the sterile pouch and use sanitized scissors to cut it to fit the tattooed area, being sure to leave a 1 to 2 inch around the edge of the tattoo.

Peel off the backing position of the Derm Shield over the tattoo with the adhesive side facing the skin. Using light pressure, apply starting from the center and smooth out to the edges to eliminate air bubbles. Don’t stretch the Derm Shield during application!

Typically, clients should leave the first Derm Shield on for 24 hours and can reapply a second Derm Shield after that. For more details, refer to our Top 5 Tips for Using Aftercare Bandages.
